I read this book in preparation for my move to Kansas, to support my brother and his kids (aged 12 and 11) while their Mom is deployed with the military. It's definitely made me more mindful of how I interact with them and how I respect them. They're NOT big kids or little adults, they are in a totally unique space where their whole job is to figure out their individuation while constrained by their dependence on adults/authority figures. If nothing else, remembering this space they're in shifts the energy in a good way and creates space for curiosity and collaborative exploration instead of simply telling them "how it is".Product details

Heather is clear and easy to understand with practical information. I loved this book as a former Jr. High teacher I wish I had the information sooner! Thanks for practical wisdom.
How said, I could not read that years ago, when my kids were teans... Every parent should read it.
For some reason, although the title doesn't imply it, I thought this book was going to be about how horse therapy can help lots of teens who are socially awkward. Maybe because the author is a horse therapist.
But no, the author also has been in her career a school administrator at some alternative schools, and this book is about the parallels she's seen between horses and teenagers, and how that insight can help adults deal with teens in a new way.
It's valuable. Nobody (who's ever been in the same zip code as a horse) would expect to be able to deal with it through brute force; similarly, teenagers (who just recently, as children, were obeying instruction without question) don't, ah, respond <i>constructively</i>, let us say, with higher and more tense stakes and threats.
In short, both species (yes, teens are a different species than you or me) need respect for their points of view. In long, well, Kirby says it better than I could, and I guess that's why she wrote a whole book about it.
Fabulous completely on target book! So thankful to have it, a must read for anyone trying to understand adolescent behaviors. Demystifies and provides positive approaches to this often challenging but exhilarating stage of life!
A well-written, moving book that explores with love, understanding and wisdom the incredible relationship between troubled teens and horses. Heather Kirby comes through as everything one could hope for in a teacher, counselor and therapist. This is an invaluable must-read for parents, teachers and therapists who are challenged by the turbulent adolescent years.
Very nice description of how teens can be helped with horses.
This book is a page turner. Every word Heather Kirby writes is of value to the parent of a teenager or teachers of teens. The 7 C’s are critically important to understanding perfected parenting and communication with your teen. The most important piece of the encounter with your teen is the relationship. Heather tells you everything you need to know to improve your relationship with your teen as well as gives you guidance to get over the hurdles in raising a teen. I cannot recommend this book more highly.
